All About the Base Layer

The importance of workwear base layers.

If your profession dictates long days outside in cold weather you’ll probably already know the benefits of good quality base layer. Designed to be tight fitting, sitting next to the skin to keep the wearer warm and also wicking away sweat as fast as possible to keep them dry.

It’s very easy to get it wrong and spending a day of hard labour soaked in perspiration can lead to a very uncomfortable and cold shift. Having the right thermals can be a godsend.

A good base layer should give you a balance between moisture absorption and heat retention regardless of what activity you are performing. The type of fabric you choose has a large part to play in this.

Base layers come in several types fabrics: Merino wool, silk or Polypropylene are some, but polyester is by far the most popular. Man made, strong and durable it is very effective at managing moisture away from the skin. It’s make-up allows for a tight fitting garment that stretches to hug the body ensuring maximum benefits to the wearer. Very fast drying with excellent wicking performance, many polyester base layers have odour resistance treatments built into the fabric.

Although not solely for winter weather this is it’s most popular purpose. Winter thermals are heavily focuses toward the wearers core temperature. If you can keep the torso warm and comfortable it’s much easier to heat the extremities. Usually winter base layers are not exclusively polyester but are a combination of different materials each offering a different level of effectiveness.

So, when deciding what’s best for you remember the base layer is designed to fit tight to the body, a loose layer diminishes the benefits greatly and totally nullifies the point of the garment. So check the size guide carefully.
